Spring Flowers

Miniature Daffodils on MyHumbleHomeandGarden.com

I love Spring Flowers! What a beautiful time of year! These miniature daffodils and their bright yellow color simply make me smile! Last year, they had just started blooming at the end of March. They are at least two weeks early this year. My hope is that winter is long gone, although, the realization is that it can rear it's ugly head for several weeks yet.

Aidan went fishing with Papa and Will on Saturday. Sophia spent the afternoon with me. We went to Showplace Garden Center in Hebron, Kentucky. We picked out some ground cover for a spot at the bottom of the hill in the backyard. Danielle, who works there, was surprised to see that these were blooming already.

Periwinkle Blue Vinca on MyHumbleHomeandGarden.com

One of my favorite colors is periwinkle blue. Aren't these just gorgeous? This type of Vinca is a ground cover. We are having a bit of an issue with some erosion in the spot where we are planting this. It is supposed to be an excellent plant for erosion control. Hopefully, it will help with that problem. It grows and spreads quickly. One small plant can spread to 8 feet across!

This plant can be invasive in the garden, but is said to have rarely been seen escaping into undisturbed woods. Our backyard is bordered with undisturbed woods.

It is also heat tolerant and apparently grows vigorously in the shade. Once it is established, it should shade out future growth of weeds, eliminating weeding. Hallelujah!

We also picked up two of these Veronica 'Georgia Blue'. This plant has tiny little dark green leaves which turn burgundy in the winter. Not as invasive as the Vinca, it grows only one to three feet across. It grows about 6" tall and is deer tolerant, which is a factor in this location right by the woods.

It attracts butterflies with it's sky blue blanket of flowers from spring into early summer. That is a bonus! The small saucer-shaped white-eyed blue flowers grow on racemes, like the lily-of-the-valley.

After researching these two plants a little more, I am thinking some more of these Veronica will be added to my list!

Hyacinth Blue on MyHumbleHomeandGarden.com

This Hyacinth Blue, as the marker on the plant reads, looks more like a pale red- violet color to me. It is not as deep a purple as the purple colored hyacinth already growing in the garden. It looks to me like it has a little more red in it rather than blue.

This plant was a purchase from the grocery. I just loved the color and don't have that color in the garden. The temptation was too great. Along with the white, pink, and the purple, we will have this beautiful color in the garden next spring!

Just like the miniature daffodils from a couple of years ago, I am not drying the bulbs and going through all of the storing them and waiting until fall to plant them. They are going to be planted in the ground near the other hyacinth sometime this week.

White Hyacinth on MyHumbleHomeandGarden.com

It rained last night and this morning the white hyacinth were covered with raindrops, but they are beginning to open their blossoms. Hyacinth flowers have such a beautiful scent. To pin this click here ►Spring Flowers.
