Attack of the Bunnies

Last week Dave and I took a trip to St. Augustine Beach, Florida. The beach was beautiful, calming and just plain wonderful.

We arrived home late Friday evening, so I was anxious to see the transformation of the garden in the week we had been gone.

Just before we left home, I had planted the clematis, Alex had given me and added several wave petunias around the base to keep the roots shaded.

As you can see in the picture, this petunia is shading nothing! Before leaving, I had purchase mothballs and scattered them around the flowers and the strawberries in the gardens. The chipmunks have been devouring every strawberry and leaving traces of them all around our home, scattered all over the pavers, the grindstone and on the deck!

I can get over the strawberries, but the bunnies are eating the phlox all the way to the ground and now they have started on the petunias. Mothballs are not affecting them at all; so now I have scattered red pepper flakes all over and around the petunias and the phlox.

After this attack of the bunnies, I am wishing the red fox I photographed, running through the backyard last winter, had helped himself to bunny lunches!
