Rooting Roses for the Garden
Did you know you can actually root roses, which were given to you in bouquets? I had no idea!
On Pinterest a couple of weeks ago, I came across a video on how to root roses from flower arrangements, and plant in your own garden. I root rosemary, lavender, basil and other plants for the garden all the time. Why had I never thought of this?
Feeling like the flowers were so wasted, (I mean they die and you throw them away!), I told Dave not to buy flowers for me. Imagine that!
I have a whole new perspective on this now. Not only do you get to enjoy the beauty and fragrance of the bouquet, but then enjoy watching as they take on new life, rooting, planting and then enjoying them in your garden! Imagine telling your friends and family how you received the flowers from someone and now have plants from those bouquets, growing in your garden!
Obviously, I am trying this to see if I can actually create a plant for my garden!
This picture is of a single stemmed rose, given to my daughter. When the bloom was spent, I cut off the blossom, cut the stem at an angle below a leaf node in two places, creating two potential plants.
These have been in a glass in my kitchen window for about two and a half weeks now. As you can see there is new growth. Each day I look to see if roots are developing. I expect it to take a few weeks, but will keep you posted...
